A brief note on Trigonometric Ratios . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The sides The hypotenuse faces the right angle and is the longest side. From an acute angle, the opposite side faces it and the adjacent side touches it. Change the angle and opposite and adjacent swap; the hypotenuse stays. The six ratios sin A = opp hyp \sin A = \dfrac{\text{opp}}{\text{hyp}} sin A = hyp opp , cos A = adj hyp \cos A = \dfrac{\text{adj}}{\text{hyp}} cos A = hyp adj , tan A = opp adj \tan A = \dfrac{\text{opp}}{\text{adj}} tan A = adj opp . cosec A = 1 sin A \operatorname{cosec} A = \dfrac{1}{\sin A} cosec A = sin A 1 , sec A = 1 cos A \sec A = \dfrac{1}{\cos A} sec A = cos A 1 , cot A = 1 tan A \cot A = \dfrac{1}{\tan A} cot A = tan A 1 . tan A = sin A cos A \tan A = \dfrac{\sin A}{\cos A} tan A = cos A sin A and cot A = cos A sin A \cot A = \dfrac{\cos A}{\sin A} cot A = sin A cos A . A ratio depends only on the angle , not on the size of the triangle. For an acute angle, sin A \sin A sin A and cos A \cos A cos A are less than 1 1 1 ; sec A \sec A sec A and cosec A \operatorname{cosec} A cosec A are greater than 1 1 1 . From one ratio to all six Take the two sides of the given ratio as multiples of k k k . Find the third side with Pythagoras. Read off the other ratios; the k k k cancels. A worked example Given tan A = 7 24 \tan A = \dfrac{7}{24} tan A = 24 7 , find cos A \cos A cos A and cosec A \operatorname{cosec} A cosec A .
Sides. Opposite 7 k 7k 7 k , adjacent 24 k 24k 24 k . Hypotenuse. 49 k 2 + 576 k 2 = 25 k \sqrt{49k^2 + 576k^2} = 25k 49 k 2 + 576 k 2 = 25 k . Ratios. cos A = 24 25 \cos A = \dfrac{24}{25} cos A = 25 24 and cosec A = 25 7 \operatorname{cosec} A = \dfrac{25}{7} cosec A = 7 25 . Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program starts from tan A = 7 24 \tan A = \dfrac{7}{24} tan A = 24 7 and prints all six ratios.
Run it. Is the hypotenuse 25 25 25 ?
1. Change opp, adj = 7, 24 to opp, adj = 1, 1. What do you notice about sin A and cos A?
Mistakes to avoid Naming sides before choosing the angle. Opposite and adjacent depend on it. Pairing reciprocals wrongly: cosec \operatorname{cosec} cosec goes with sin \sin sin , sec \sec sec with cos \cos cos . Adding sides instead of squares in Pythagoras. Reading sin A \sin A sin A as sin × A \sin \times A sin × A . It is one number. Check yourself In triangle J K L JKL J K L the right angle is at K K K . Which side is opposite angle J J J ? Stuck?
