A brief note on The Second Law and Momentum . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The big ideas Momentum p = m v p = mv p = m v , in kg m/s, with a direction. Second law: F = m a F = ma F = ma , where F F F is the net force. 1 N = 1 kg m/s 2 1\ \text{N} = 1\ \text{kg m/s}^2 1 N = 1 kg m/s 2 . The same law as force = = = change of momentum ÷ \div ÷ time : a longer stop needs a smaller force. Four steps: draw the forces, find the net force, a = F / m a = F/m a = F / m , then the equations of motion. The facts at a glance Quantity Formula Unit Momentum p = m v p = mv p = m v kg m/s Second law F = m a F = ma F = ma N Force from momentum F = m v − m u t F = \dfrac{mv - mu}{t} F = t m v − m u N
A worked example A 120 kg 120\ \text{kg} 120 kg scooter with its rider has a net force of 360 N 360\ \text{N} 360 N forward for 4 s 4\ \text{s} 4 s , then a braking force of 600 N 600\ \text{N} 600 N for 2.4 s 2.4\ \text{s} 2.4 s . Describe its motion.
Speeding up. a = 360 N 120 kg = 3 m/s 2 a = \dfrac{360\ \text{N}}{120\ \text{kg}} = 3\ \text{m/s}^2 a = 120 kg 360 N = 3 m/s 2 , so it gains 12 m/s 12\ \text{m/s} 12 m/s . Braking. a = − 600 N 120 kg = − 5 m/s 2 a = -\dfrac{600\ \text{N}}{120\ \text{kg}} = -5\ \text{m/s}^2 a = − 120 kg 600 N = − 5 m/s 2 , so it loses 12 m/s 12\ \text{m/s} 12 m/s . So it ends at rest again. Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program works out the scooter.
Read it, then run it.
Brake with 400 N 400\ \text{N} 400 N instead. How long does it now take to stop from 12 m/s 12\ \text{m/s} 12 m/s ?
Mistakes to avoid Using one force instead of the net force in F = m a F = ma F = ma . Forgetting direction in momentum. A bounce changes it by m ( u + v ) m(u + v) m ( u + v ) . Mixing grams and kilograms. Change to kg first. Thinking airbags reduce the momentum change. They only make it take longer.
