Completing the square x 2 + b x + ( b 2 ) 2 = ( x + b 2 ) 2 x^2 + bx + \left(\frac{b}{2}\right)^2 = \left(x + \frac{b}{2}\right)^2 x 2 + b x + ( 2 b ) 2 = ( x + 2 b ) 2 . Move the number term, add ( b 2 ) 2 \left(\frac{b}{2}\right)^2 ( 2 b ) 2 to both sides, take the square root with ± \pm ± , and solve. With a x 2 ax^2 a x 2 , divide every term by a a a first. If the right side is negative, there are no real roots. For a x 2 + b x + c = 0 ax^2 + bx + c = 0 a x 2 + b x + c = 0 , with a ≠ 0 a \neq 0 a = 0 : x = − b ± b 2 − 4 a c 2 a \displaystyle x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a} x = 2 a − b ± b 2 − 4 a c Read a a a , b b b and c c c with their signs. Work out b 2 − 4 a c b^2 - 4ac b 2 − 4 a c first. Check each root by putting it back, and keep only the roots that make sense in a problem. The discriminant D = b 2 − 4 a c D = b^2 - 4ac D = b 2 − 4 a c . D > 0 D > 0 D > 0 : two distinct real roots. D = 0 D = 0 D = 0 : two equal real roots, x = − b 2 a x = -\dfrac{b}{2a} x = − 2 a b . D < 0 D < 0 D < 0 : no real roots. To make the roots equal, set D = 0 D = 0 D = 0 and solve for the unknown number. A worked example Solve 4 x 2 − 4 x − 1 = 0 4x^2 - 4x - 1 = 0 4 x 2 − 4 x − 1 = 0 .
The numbers. a = 4 a = 4 a = 4 , b = − 4 b = -4 b = − 4 , c = − 1 c = -1 c = − 1 . The discriminant. D = 16 + 16 = 32 D = 16 + 16 = 32 D = 16 + 16 = 32 . It is positive, so there are two distinct roots. The formula. x = 4 ± 32 8 = 4 ± 4 2 8 = 1 ± 2 2 x = \dfrac{4 \pm \sqrt{32}}{8} = \dfrac{4 \pm 4\sqrt{2}}{8} = \dfrac{1 \pm \sqrt{2}}{2} x = 8 4 ± 32 = 8 4 ± 4 2 = 2 1 ± 2 . The numbers. x ≈ 1.207 x \approx 1.207 x ≈ 1.207 or x ≈ − 0.207 x \approx -0.207 x ≈ − 0.207 . Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program works out the discriminant of four equations and solves each one that has real roots.
Run it. Which equation has a repeated root?
1. Add the equation (1, -10, 25). Predict what the program prints first.
Mistakes to avoid Adding b 2 b^2 b 2 when completing the square. Add the square of half of b b b . Losing a sign. With b = − 4 b = -4 b = − 4 , − b = 4 -b = 4 − b = 4 , and b 2 = 16 b^2 = 16 b 2 = 16 . Dividing only the root by 2 a 2a 2 a . The whole top is divided by 2 a 2a 2 a . Saying "no roots" when D = 0 D = 0 D = 0 . There is one root, counted twice. Check yourself Which number completes the square for x 2 + 18 x x^2 + 18x x 2 + 18 x ? Stuck?
