A brief note on Solving Pairs of Equations Algebraically . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The three methods Substitution: write one letter in terms of the other, put it into the second equation, solve, and put back. Elimination: multiply to match the coefficients of one letter, add or subtract, solve, and put back. Cross-multiplication: write both equations as a x + b y + c = 0 ax + by + c = 0 a x + b y + c = 0 . Then x = X D x = \dfrac{X}{D} x = D X and y = Y D y = \dfrac{Y}{D} y = D Y , where X = b 1 c 2 − b 2 c 1 X = b_1c_2 - b_2c_1 X = b 1 c 2 − b 2 c 1 , Y = c 1 a 2 − c 2 a 1 Y = c_1a_2 - c_2a_1 Y = c 1 a 2 − c 2 a 1 and D = a 1 b 2 − a 2 b 1 D = a_1b_2 - a_2b_1 D = a 1 b 2 − a 2 b 1 . Always check the answer in both equations. When both letters disappear A false statement such as 0 = 5 0 = 5 0 = 5 means no solution: the lines are parallel. The statement 0 = 0 0 = 0 0 = 0 means infinitely many solutions: the two equations give the same line. In cross-multiplication, D = 0 D = 0 D = 0 means the same thing, so the formula cannot be used. Equations in 1 over x and 1 over y Let u = 1 x u = \dfrac{1}{x} u = x 1 and v = 1 y v = \dfrac{1}{y} v = y 1 , solve for u u u and v v v , then take reciprocals. With x + y x + y x + y and x − y x - y x − y in the denominators, let u = 1 x + y u = \dfrac{1}{x + y} u = x + y 1 and v = 1 x − y v = \dfrac{1}{x - y} v = x − y 1 . The answer must give x x x and y y y , not u u u and v v v . Word problems Name the unknowns with their units, and write one equation for each fact. A two-digit number with tens digit x x x and units digit y y y is 10 x + y 10x + y 10 x + y . Downstream speed is u + v u + v u + v , and upstream speed is u − v u - v u − v . Check the answer against the words of the problem. A worked example Solve 7 x − 2 y = 16 7x - 2y = 16 7 x − 2 y = 16 and 3 x + 4 y = 36 3x + 4y = 36 3 x + 4 y = 36 .
Match y y y . Multiply the first equation by 2 2 2 : 14 x − 4 y = 32 14x - 4y = 32 14 x − 4 y = 32 . Add the second equation: 17 x = 68 17x = 68 17 x = 68 , so x = 4 x = 4 x = 4 . Find y y y . 3 × 4 + 4 y = 36 3 \times 4 + 4y = 36 3 × 4 + 4 y = 36 gives y = 6 y = 6 y = 6 . Check. 7 × 4 − 2 × 6 = 16 7 \times 4 - 2 \times 6 = 16 7 × 4 − 2 × 6 = 16 and 3 × 4 + 4 × 6 = 36 3 \times 4 + 4 \times 6 = 36 3 × 4 + 4 × 6 = 36 . Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program solves three pairs with the formulas, and checks each answer in both equations.
Run it. Does each pair satisfy both of its equations?
1. Add the pair (1, 1, 7, 1, -1, 1) to the list. What are x x x and y y y ?
Mistakes to avoid Multiplying only one side of an equation. Losing a sign when you subtract one equation from another. Using the wrong sign for c c c in cross-multiplication.
