A brief note on Separating Mixtures . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The big ideas Every method uses a difference in a property between the parts, and none of them makes a new substance. Chromatography separates dyes that travel at different speeds on paper. R f = d D R_f = \dfrac{d}{D} R f = D d , with no unit, between 0 0 0 and 1 1 1 . Crystallisation purifies a solid: impurities stay dissolved as the hot solution cools. Distillation separates liquids that mix by their boiling points: simple if they are more than about 25 K 25\ \text{K} 25 K apart, fractional if closer. Which method for which mixture The mixture The difference The method A solid that does not dissolve particle size filtration A dissolved solid it does not evaporate evaporation or crystallisation Tiny particles in a liquid density centrifugation Two liquids that do not mix density separating funnel One part sublimes sublimation heating under a cold funnel Dyes in an ink speed on paper chromatography Liquids that mix boiling point distillation
A worked example The solvent rises 10.5 cm 10.5\ \text{cm} 10.5 cm , and two spots rise 7.35 cm 7.35\ \text{cm} 7.35 cm and 2.52 cm 2.52\ \text{cm} 2.52 cm . Find their R f R_f R f values, and where each would be with the solvent at 14 cm 14\ \text{cm} 14 cm .
The upper spot. R f = 7.35 cm 10.5 cm = 0.70 R_f = \dfrac{7.35\ \text{cm}}{10.5\ \text{cm}} = 0.70 R f = 10.5 cm 7.35 cm = 0.70 . The lower spot. R f = 2.52 cm 10.5 cm = 0.24 R_f = \dfrac{2.52\ \text{cm}}{10.5\ \text{cm}} = 0.24 R f = 10.5 cm 2.52 cm = 0.24 . A longer run. Each dye keeps its R f R_f R f : 0.70 × 14 cm = 9.8 cm 0.70 \times 14\ \text{cm} = 9.8\ \text{cm} 0.70 × 14 cm = 9.8 cm and 0.24 × 14 cm = 3.36 cm 0.24 \times 14\ \text{cm} = 3.36\ \text{cm} 0.24 × 14 cm = 3.36 cm . Read it, then run it. Do its numbers agree with the example?
1. Change front = 10.5 to front = 7.0, with the same spots. What goes wrong with the upper spot?
Mistakes to avoid Measuring from the top of the paper. Both distances start at the starting line. An R f R_f R f above 1 1 1 . No spot passes the solvent front: you have divided the wrong way round. Simple distillation for close boiling points. Below about 25 K 25\ \text{K} 25 K apart, use a fractionating column. Filtering a solution. A dissolved solid passes straight through the paper.
