Rules for square roots For positive a a a and b b b :
a b = a b \sqrt{a}\,\sqrt{b} = \sqrt{ab} a b = ab and a b = a b \dfrac{\sqrt{a}}{\sqrt{b}} = \sqrt{\dfrac{a}{b}} b a = b a . a + b \sqrt{a} + \sqrt{b} a + b is not a + b \sqrt{a + b} a + b . Simplify by taking out a perfect square: 98 = 49 × 2 = 7 2 \sqrt{98} = \sqrt{49 \times 2} = 7\sqrt{2} 98 = 49 × 2 = 7 2 . ( a + b ) ( a − b ) = a − b (\sqrt{a} + \sqrt{b})(\sqrt{a} - \sqrt{b}) = a - b ( a + b ) ( a − b ) = a − b , and ( a ± b ) 2 = a + b ± 2 a b (\sqrt{a} \pm \sqrt{b})^2 = a + b \pm 2\sqrt{ab} ( a ± b ) 2 = a + b ± 2 ab . Rationalising Bottom Multiply top and bottom by New bottom a \sqrt{a} a a \sqrt{a} a a a a a + b a + \sqrt{b} a + b a − b a - \sqrt{b} a − b a 2 − b a^2 - b a 2 − b a − b \sqrt{a} - \sqrt{b} a − b a + b \sqrt{a} + \sqrt{b} a + b a − b a - b a − b
Laws of exponents a m a n = a m + n a^m a^n = a^{m+n} a m a n = a m + n , ( a m ) n = a m n (a^m)^n = a^{mn} ( a m ) n = a mn , a m a n = a m − n \dfrac{a^m}{a^n} = a^{m-n} a n a m = a m − n , a 0 = 1 a^0 = 1 a 0 = 1 , a − n = 1 a n a^{-n} = \dfrac{1}{a^n} a − n = a n 1 .
a 1 / n a^{1/n} a 1/ n is the n n n -th root of a a a , and a m / n = ( a n ) m a^{m/n} = \left(\sqrt[n]{a}\right)^m a m / n = ( n a ) m . Take the root first.
A worked example Rationalise 4 6 − 2 \dfrac{4}{\sqrt{6} - \sqrt{2}} 6 − 2 4 .
The conjugate. Multiply the top and the bottom by 6 + 2 \sqrt{6} + \sqrt{2} 6 + 2 . The bottom. 6 − 2 = 4 6 - 2 = 4 6 − 2 = 4 . Simplify. 4 ( 6 + 2 ) 4 = 6 + 2 \dfrac{4(\sqrt{6} + \sqrt{2})}{4} = \sqrt{6} + \sqrt{2} 4 4 ( 6 + 2 ) = 6 + 2 . Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program checks the worked example with decimals.
Read it, then run it. Are the two numbers the same?
1. Change the top from 4 to 8. What should the rationalised form be now?
Mistakes to avoid Adding roots as if they were numbers. 9 + 16 = 7 \sqrt{9} + \sqrt{16} = 7 9 + 16 = 7 , not 5 5 5 . Forgetting the middle term. ( 3 + 1 ) 2 = 4 + 2 3 (\sqrt{3} + 1)^2 = 4 + 2\sqrt{3} ( 3 + 1 ) 2 = 4 + 2 3 . Multiplying only the bottom. The top must be multiplied by the same number. Reading a − n a^{-n} a − n as a negative number. 2 − 2 = 1 4 2^{-2} = \dfrac{1}{4} 2 − 2 = 4 1 . Check yourself Simplify 45 + 20 \sqrt{45} + \sqrt{20} 45 + 20 . Stuck?
