Valency from the outer electrons, atomic size, metallic character, gaining and losing electrons, and the oxides across period 3. With a worked example, practice, a program and questions.
A brief note on Patterns Across Periods and Down Groups. Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
| Outer electrons | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Valency | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 |
Valency is the same down a group and runs across a period.
| Across a period | Down a group | |
|---|---|---|
| Atomic size | falls: more protons pull the same shells in | rises: a shell is added |
| Metallic character | falls | rises |
| Tendency to gain electrons | rises | falls |
Metal oxides are basic, non-metal oxides acidic, and aluminium oxide amphoteric. Across period 3 they turn from basic to acidic.
Silicon has the atomic number . Find its valency and the formula of its oxide.
The program finds the valency and the oxide from the outer electrons.
