Isomerism in Coordination Compounds: Quick Revision
A brief note on Isomerism in Coordination Compounds: structural isomers, cis and trans, fac and mer, optical isomers and how to count them. With a worked example, practice, a program and questions to check yourself.

Structural isomers
Same overall formula, different arrangement of the parts.
Ionisation: a ligand and a counter ion swap. Example: [Pt(NH3)4Cl2]Br2 and [Pt(NH3)4Br2]Cl2. Silver nitrate gives AgBr with the first and AgCl with the second.
Hydrate: water inside or outside the bracket. Example: [Cr(H2O)6]Cl3, [CrCl(H2O)5]Cl2⋅H2O and [CrCl2(H2O)4]Cl⋅2H2O.
Linkage: an ambidentate ligand bonds through its other atom, such as NO2− (N or O) and SCN− (S or N).
Coordination: ligands swap between the cation and the anion of one salt, such as [Cu(NH3)4][PtCl4] and [Pt(NH3)4][CuCl4].
Only free ions outside the bracket precipitate with silver nitrate or barium chloride.
