A brief note on Ionic Compounds and the Extraction of Metals . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
Ionic compounds A metal atom loses its outer electrons: Na → Na + \text{Na} \rightarrow \text{Na}^+ Na → Na + , Mg → Mg 2 + \text{Mg} \rightarrow \text{Mg}^{2+} Mg → Mg 2 + . A non-metal atom gains electrons to make eight: Cl → Cl − \text{Cl} \rightarrow \text{Cl}^- Cl → Cl − , O → O 2 − \text{O} \rightarrow \text{O}^{2-} O → O 2 − . The opposite ions attract: an ionic bond. The charges in a formula cancel. Properties: hard, brittle crystals; high melting points; dissolve in water; conduct only when melted or dissolved. Place in the series Metals Method top K, Na, Ca, Mg, Al electrolysis of the molten compound middle Zn, Fe, Pb roast or calcine, then reduce with carbon bottom Cu, Hg, Ag, Au heat the ore, or found free
Copper is refined by electrolysis: impure copper anode, pure copper cathode, impurities fall as anode mud.
A worked example What mass of zinc comes from 32.4 g 32.4\ \text{g} 32.4 g of zinc oxide? ZnO + C → Zn + CO \text{ZnO} + \text{C} \rightarrow \text{Zn} + \text{CO} ZnO + C → Zn + CO . Use Zn = 65 \text{Zn} = 65 Zn = 65 and O = 16 \text{O} = 16 O = 16 .
Molar mass. ZnO = 81 g/mol \text{ZnO} = 81\ \text{g/mol} ZnO = 81 g/mol . Moles. 32.4 g 81 g/mol = 0.4 mol \dfrac{32.4\ \text{g}}{81\ \text{g/mol}} = 0.4\ \text{mol} 81 g/mol 32.4 g = 0.4 mol . Zinc. 0.4 mol × 65 g/mol = 26 g 0.4\ \text{mol} \times 65\ \text{g/mol} = 26\ \text{g} 0.4 mol × 65 g/mol = 26 g . Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program chooses the method for four metals and works out the worked example.
Read it, then run it. Which metals need electrolysis?
1. Change zinc_oxide to 8.1. How much zinc is that?
Mistakes to avoid Saying solid salt conducts. Its ions cannot move until it melts or dissolves. Calling NaCl a molecule. It is a lattice of ions. Reducing aluminium oxide with carbon. Aluminium is more reactive than carbon. Mixing up roasting and calcination. Roasting is for sulphides, calcination for carbonates. Check yourself What is the charge on a sulphide ion? Stuck?
