A brief note on Higher Derivatives and the Mean Value Theorems . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
Higher derivatives Notation: f ′ ′ ( x ) f''(x) f ′′ ( x ) , d 2 y d x 2 \dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} d x 2 d 2 y , y 2 y_2 y 2 . The n n n th derivative is f ( n ) ( x ) f^{(n)}(x) f ( n ) ( x ) . Meaning: f ′ ′ f'' f ′′ is the rate of change of the slope. If f f f is position, f ′ ′ f'' f ′′ is acceleration. Bend: f ′ ′ > 0 f'' > 0 f ′′ > 0 bends up. f ′ ′ < 0 f'' < 0 f ′′ < 0 bends down. Parametric: d 2 y d x 2 = d d t ( d y d x ) / d x d t \dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} = \dfrac{d}{dt}\left(\dfrac{dy}{dx}\right)\Big/\dfrac{dx}{dt} d x 2 d 2 y = d t d ( d x d y ) / d t d x . Rolle's theorem Statement: f f f continuous on [ a , b ] [a, b] [ a , b ] , differentiable on ( a , b ) (a, b) ( a , b ) and f ( a ) = f ( b ) f(a) = f(b) f ( a ) = f ( b ) imply f ′ ( c ) = 0 f'(c) = 0 f ′ ( c ) = 0 for some c c c in ( a , b ) (a, b) ( a , b ) . Meaning: a horizontal tangent between two points of equal height. Use: between two roots of f f f there is a root of f ′ f' f ′ . This bounds the number of real roots. The Mean Value Theorem Statement: f f f continuous on [ a , b ] [a, b] [ a , b ] and differentiable on ( a , b ) (a, b) ( a , b ) imply f ′ ( c ) = f ( b ) − f ( a ) b − a f'(c) = \dfrac{f(b) - f(a)}{b - a} f ′ ( c ) = b − a f ( b ) − f ( a ) for some c c c in ( a , b ) (a, b) ( a , b ) . Meaning: a tangent parallel to the chord. The average rate equals an instantaneous rate. Uses: speed, constants ( f ′ = 0 f' = 0 f ′ = 0 means f f f is constant) and inequalities. A worked example Find the point c c c of the Mean Value Theorem for f ( x ) = x 2 + 1 f(x) = x^2 + 1 f ( x ) = x 2 + 1 on [ 1 , 4 ] [1, 4] [ 1 , 4 ] .
The chord slope. f ( 4 ) = 17 f(4) = 17 f ( 4 ) = 17 and f ( 1 ) = 2 f(1) = 2 f ( 1 ) = 2 . The slope is 15 3 = 5 \dfrac{15}{3} = 5 3 15 = 5 . Solve f ′ ( c ) = 5 f'(c) = 5 f ′ ( c ) = 5 . 2 c = 5 2c = 5 2 c = 5 , so c = 2.5 c = 2.5 c = 2.5 . Check. 2.5 2.5 2.5 lies in ( 1 , 4 ) (1, 4) ( 1 , 4 ) . Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program checks Rolle's theorem and the Mean Value Theorem on x 3 − 3 x x^3 - 3x x 3 − 3 x , including the second derivative at c c c .
Run it. Is the point c c c inside the interval each time?
1. Change the interval to a, b = 0, 2. Do f(a) and f(b) match, so that Rolle's theorem applies?
Mistakes to avoid Skipping a condition of the theorem. A point outside the open interval. Keep only the solutions inside ( a , b ) (a, b) ( a , b ) . Using the midpoint as c c c . That works only for a quadratic. A wrong parametric formula. Differentiate d y d x \dfrac{dy}{dx} d x d y with respect to t t t , then divide by d x d t \dfrac{dx}{dt} d t d x . Reading d 2 y d x 2 \dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} d x 2 d 2 y as a power. The 2 2 2 is the order of the derivative. Check yourself Find y ′ ′ y'' y ′′ for y = sin 4 x y = \sin 4x y = sin 4 x . Stuck?
