General equation: A x + B y + C = 0 Ax + By + C = 0 A x + B y + C = 0 . Slope and intercepts: − A B -\dfrac{A}{B} − B A , − C A -\dfrac{C}{A} − A C and − C B -\dfrac{C}{B} − B C . Normal form: x cos α + y sin α = p x\cos\alpha + y\sin\alpha = p x cos α + y sin α = p , with p ≥ 0 p \ge 0 p ≥ 0 . Point to line: ∣ A x 1 + B y 1 + C ∣ A 2 + B 2 \dfrac{|Ax_1 + By_1 + C|}{\sqrt{A^2 + B^2}} A 2 + B 2 ∣ A x 1 + B y 1 + C ∣ . Parallel lines: ∣ C 1 − C 2 ∣ A 2 + B 2 \dfrac{|C_1 - C_2|}{\sqrt{A^2 + B^2}} A 2 + B 2 ∣ C 1 − C 2 ∣ . Family through a meeting point: L 1 + k L 2 = 0 L_1 + kL_2 = 0 L 1 + k L 2 = 0 . Parallel to A x + B y + C = 0 Ax + By + C = 0 A x + B y + C = 0 : A x + B y + k = 0 Ax + By + k = 0 A x + B y + k = 0 . Perpendicular: B x − A y + k = 0 Bx - Ay + k = 0 B x − A y + k = 0 . A point is on the origin's side of a line when its value has the same sign as C C C . Concurrent lines: the meeting point of two lies on the third. Shift of origin to ( h , k ) (h, k) ( h , k ) : X = x − h X = x - h X = x − h and Y = y − k Y = y - k Y = y − k . A worked example Find the distance of ( − 1 , 4 ) (-1, 4) ( − 1 , 4 ) from 5 x + 12 y − 30 = 0 5x + 12y - 30 = 0 5 x + 12 y − 30 = 0 , and the gap between that line and 5 x + 12 y + 35 = 0 5x + 12y + 35 = 0 5 x + 12 y + 35 = 0 .
Step 1. The distance. 5 ( − 1 ) + 12 ( 4 ) − 30 = 13 5(-1) + 12(4) - 30 = 13 5 ( − 1 ) + 12 ( 4 ) − 30 = 13 and 25 + 144 = 13 \sqrt{25 + 144} = 13 25 + 144 = 13 , so d = 1 d = 1 d = 1 .
Step 2. The gap. The coefficients already match, so d = ∣ − 30 − 35 ∣ 13 = 5 d = \dfrac{|-30 - 35|}{13} = 5 d = 13 ∣ − 30 − 35∣ = 5 .
Answer: 1 1 1 and 5 5 5 .

A program to try The program checks both answers of the worked example.
Run it. Does it print 1.0 1.0 1.0 and 5.0 5.0 5.0 ?
1. Change the point to x1, y1 = 2, 3. Predict the distance first.
Mistakes to avoid The slope as A B \dfrac{A}{B} B A . It is − A B -\dfrac{A}{B} − B A . No absolute value. A distance is never negative. Parallel lines with different coefficients. Match A A A and B B B first. Expecting L 2 L_2 L 2 in the family. It is never a member. The shift the wrong way. The new coordinate is x − h x - h x − h .
