A brief note on Combinations . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
A combination is a selection: order does not matter. n C r = n ! r ! ( n − r ) ! = n ( n − 1 ) ⋯ ( n − r + 1 ) r ! ^{n}C_{r} = \dfrac{n!}{r!\,(n - r)!} = \dfrac{n(n - 1)\cdots(n - r + 1)}{r!} n C r = r ! ( n − r )! n ! = r ! n ( n − 1 ) ⋯ ( n − r + 1 ) . n P r = n C r × r ! ^{n}P_{r} = {}^{n}C_{r} \times r! n P r = n C r × r ! : choose, then arrange. n C 0 = n C n = 1 ^{n}C_{0} = {}^{n}C_{n} = 1 n C 0 = n C n = 1 , n C 1 = n ^{n}C_{1} = n n C 1 = n and n C 2 = n ( n − 1 ) 2 ^{n}C_{2} = \dfrac{n(n - 1)}{2} n C 2 = 2 n ( n − 1 ) . Properties Rule In symbols symmetry n C r = n C n − r ^{n}C_{r} = {}^{n}C_{n - r} n C r = n C n − r equal values n C a = n C b ^{n}C_{a} = {}^{n}C_{b} n C a = n C b means a = b a = b a = b or a + b = n a + b = n a + b = n Pascal's rule n C r + n C r − 1 = n + 1 C r ^{n}C_{r} + {}^{n}C_{r - 1} = {}^{n + 1}C_{r} n C r + n C r − 1 = n + 1 C r neighbours n C r n C r − 1 = n − r + 1 r \dfrac{^{n}C_{r}}{^{n}C_{r - 1}} = \dfrac{n - r + 1}{r} n C r − 1 n C r = r n − r + 1
Geometry n n n points, no three in a line: n C 2 ^{n}C_{2} n C 2 lines and n C 3 ^{n}C_{3} n C 3 triangles. A polygon of n n n sides: n C 2 − n = n ( n − 3 ) 2 ^{n}C_{2} - n = \dfrac{n(n - 3)}{2} n C 2 − n = 2 n ( n − 3 ) diagonals. If k k k of the points lie on one line: subtract k C 3 ^{k}C_{3} k C 3 triangles, and replace k C 2 ^{k}C_{2} k C 2 lines by 1 1 1 . Selections with conditions Must be in: put them in, choose the rest from the others. Must be out: choose everything from the others. Separate groups: multiply the counts. At least one: total minus none. Words and codes: select, then arrange. A worked example A quiz team of 4 4 4 is chosen from 9 9 9 girls and 5 5 5 boys. How many teams have at least one boy?
Step 1. All teams. 14 C 4 = 1001 ^{14}C_{4} = 1001 14 C 4 = 1001 .
Step 2. No boy. 9 C 4 = 126 ^{9}C_{4} = 126 9 C 4 = 126 .
Step 3. Subtract. 1001 − 126 = 875 1001 - 126 = 875 1001 − 126 = 875 .
Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program lists every quiz team of the worked example, keeps those with a boy, and checks the count against the formula.
Run it. Do the listing and the formula give the same number?
1. Change the rule to teams with at least two boys. Predict the count first.
Mistakes to avoid n P r ^{n}P_{r} n P r for a team. A team has no order. Use n C r ^{n}C_{r} n C r . Only a = b a = b a = b . n C a = n C b ^{n}C_{a} = {}^{n}C_{b} n C a = n C b also allows a + b = n a + b = n a + b = n . Sides as diagonals. Take the n n n sides away from n C 2 ^{n}C_{2} n C 2 . One chosen first. Picking one woman first counts some committees more than once. Selecting without arranging. Words need the r ! r! r ! as well. Check yourself Work out 17 C 15 ^{17}C_{15} 17 C 15 .
