A brief note on Acids, Bases and the pH Scale in Daily Life . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The pH scale Below 7 7 7 acidic, 7 7 7 neutral, above 7 7 7 basic. pH = − log 10 [ H + ] \text{pH} = -\log_{10}[\text{H}^+] pH = − log 10 [ H + ] : for 10 − n M 10^{-n}\ \text{M} 1 0 − n M the pH is n n n . One step is a factor of ten. For a strong base, pH = 14 − = 14 - = 14 − pOH. pH in daily life Where pH or fact What helps Stomach hydrochloric acid, about 1.5 1.5 1.5 antacids, mild bases, for indigestion Mouth enamel dissolves below 5.5 5.5 5.5 basic toothpaste, brushing Bee or ant sting methanoic acid baking soda Wasp sting basic vinegar Acidic soil below about 6 6 6 lime Acid rain below 5.6 5.6 5.6 less sulphur and nitrogen oxides
Neutralisation volumes Millimoles = = = M × \times × mL. For a one to one reaction, M 1 V 1 = M 2 V 2 M_1 V_1 = M_2 V_2 M 1 V 1 = M 2 V 2 ; for H 2 SO 4 + 2 NaOH \text{H}_2\text{SO}_4 + 2\text{NaOH} H 2 SO 4 + 2 NaOH , halve the moles of base.
A worked example What volume of 0.20 M 0.20\ \text{M} 0.20 M sodium hydroxide neutralises 30 mL 30\ \text{mL} 30 mL of 0.15 M 0.15\ \text{M} 0.15 M hydrochloric acid?
Acid. 0.15 × 30 = 4.5 mmol 0.15 \times 30 = 4.5\ \text{mmol} 0.15 × 30 = 4.5 mmol . Base. The same 4.5 mmol 4.5\ \text{mmol} 4.5 mmol is needed. Volume. 4.5 mmol 0.20 M = 22.5 mL \dfrac{4.5\ \text{mmol}}{0.20\ \text{M}} = 22.5\ \text{mL} 0.20 M 4.5 mmol = 22.5 mL . Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program works out three neutralisation volumes, the first being the worked example.
Read it, then run it. Which case needs the least acid?
1. Add (0.12, 50, 0.30) to the list. How much acid does it need?
Mistakes to avoid Treating pH as an even scale. pH 3 3 3 is not twice as acidic as pH 6 6 6 ; it is a thousand times. Using a strong base as an antacid. Rubbing vinegar on a bee sting. It is already acidic. Forgetting the ratio for sulphuric acid, which needs two sodium hydroxide. Check yourself What is the pH of pure water at 25 ∘ C 25\ ^\circ\text{C} 25 ∘ C ? Stuck?
