How close can an alpha particle come?

An alpha particle heads straight at a nucleus and stops for a moment at its closest approach. You will compute that distance and the radius of the nucleus, and find which nuclei a fast particle actually reaches.

The idea. $d = \dfrac{2Z \times 1.44}{KE}$ fm with $KE$ in MeV, and $R = 1.2\ \text{fm} \times A^{1/3}$. The particle reaches the nucleus if $d < R$.
