An equation such as sinx=21 has infinitely many solutions, because sine repeats. The principal solutions lie in one turn, from 0 up to 2π. One formula with an integer n gives all of them: nπ+(−1)nα for sine, 2nπ±α for cosine and nπ+α for tangent. Factorise instead of dividing, and check every root.
This is the first lesson of Trigonometric Functions: Exam Practice Pack, free for everyone to read.
One equation, many solutions
In Class 10 an equation such as sinx=21 had one answer, 30∘. Now x can be any real number. The sine wave rises and falls for ever, so a level line at height 21 crosses it again and again.
A principal solution is a solution with 0≤x<2π.
The general solution is one formula, with an integer n, that gives every solution.
For sinx=21 the principal solutions are 6π and 65π. Adding any number of whole turns gives the rest.
The three general solutions
Let α be one solution, usually the principal value from a calculator. Then, for any integer n:
sinx=sinα gives x=nπ+(−1)nα;
cosx=cosα gives x=2nπ±α;
tanx=tanα gives x=nπ+α.
Why sine has this form. Two points of the unit circle have the same height: the one at α and its mirror image at π−α. With whole turns added, the solutions are 2mπ+α and (2m+1)π−α. An even n gives the first family and an odd n the second, so both fit nπ+(−1)nα.
Why cosine has this form. The points at α and −α have the same x-coordinate. Whole turns give 2nπ±α.
Why tangent has this form. Opposite points, at α and α+π, have the same ratio xy. So tangent repeats every π.
Three special cases come up again and again.
sinx=0 gives x=nπ.
cosx=0 gives x=(2n+1)2π.
sin2x=sin2α, cos2x=cos2α and tan2x=tan2α all give x=nπ±α.
Example 1: one value of sine
Solve 2sinx+2=0.
Make the function alone.sinx=−21.
Find one angle.sin(−4π)=−21, so α=−4π.
The general solution.x=nπ+(−1)n(−4π).
The principal solutions.n=1 gives π+4π=45π, and n=2 gives 2π−4π=47π.
Both lie in quadrants III and IV, where sine is negative. That is a quick check.
Set k=0.5, then k=−0.7. The dots move, but they always come in the pattern α, π−α, 2π+α, and so on.
Equations that factorise
Many equations hold more than one function. Use an identity to bring them to one function, or factorise.
Example 2: a quadratic in cosx. Solve 2sin2x+3cosx=0.
One function.sin2x=1−cos2x, so 2−2cos2x+3cosx=0, that is 2cos2x−3cosx−2=0.
Factorise.(2cosx+1)(cosx−2)=0.
Reject the impossible root.cosx=2 has no solution, since ∣cosx∣≤1.
Solve.cosx=−21=cos32π, so x=2nπ±32π.
Example 3: a sum turned into a product. Solve cosx+cos3x=0.
Sum to product.cos3x+cosx=2cos2xcosx.
Two factors.cos2x=0 gives 2x=(2n+1)2π, so x=(2n+1)4π. And cosx=0 gives x=(2n+1)2π.
In one turn.4π, 43π, 45π and 47π from the first factor, and 2π and 23π from the second: six solutions.
Check every root
Dividing loses roots. From sin2x=sinx, dividing by sinx leaves only sinx=1. The roots with sinx=0 are lost. Write sinx(sinx−1)=0 instead.
Squaring adds roots. Squaring sinx+cosx=1 gives 1+sin2x=1, so x=2nπ. In one turn that gives 0, 2π, π and 23π. Only 0 and 2π satisfy the first equation.
Undefined values. If the equation holds tanx or secx, throw away any root where cosx=0.
Practise with new numbers
Try it in Python
This program lists the solutions in one turn of sinx=v, cosx=v and tanx=v, from the general solutions. Then it puts each one back into its equation.
Common mistakes
Sine with 2nπ+α. That family misses the mirror solutions π−α. Use nπ+(−1)nα.
Cosine with nπ±α. The point at π−α has the opposite x-coordinate, so it does not solve cosx=cosα.
Keeping cosx=2. A value of sine or cosine outside [−1,1] gives no solution.
Dividing by a factor. It loses every root where that factor is zero.
Mixing units. Never write nπ+30∘. Keep the whole answer in radians.
Remember these
sinx=sinα: x=nπ+(−1)nα.
cosx=cosα: x=2nπ±α.
tanx=tanα: x=nπ+α.
Bring the equation to one function, factorise, reject impossible values, and check the roots after squaring.

Identities in a triangle: In a triangle A+B+C=π, so each angle is π minus the other two. That gives sinC=sin(A+B) and tanC=−tan(A+B), and from them identities that hold in every triangle, such as tanA+tanB+tanC=tanAtanBtanC and sin2A+sin2B+sin2C=4sinAsinBsinC. They find a missing angle in one line.
