“Summing Series: Advanced Techniques” is available to Standard subscribers.

The series that JEE, A-Level Further Maths and IB Higher Level ask most: sums of n, n squared and n cubed, arithmetico-geometric series, telescoping sums and the method of differences, with a full timed paper.

What's inside

  1. Sums of powers of natural numbers: The sum of the first nnn natural numbers is n(n+1)2\dfrac{n(n + 1)}{2}2n(n+1), of their squares n(n+1)(2n+1)6\dfrac{n(n + 1)(2n + 1)}{6}6n(n+1)(2n+1)

This is an extra course for Sequences and Series. Its main courses are open to everyone:

  • Sequences, Series and Arithmetic Progressions
  • Geometric Progressions and the AM-GM Inequality

, and of their cubes
[n(n+1)2]2\left[\dfrac{n(n + 1)}{2}\right]^2[2n(n+1)]2
. To add a series whose
kkk
th term is a polynomial in
kkk
, expand the term, split the sum, and use these three formulas.
  • Arithmetico-geometric series: An arithmetico-geometric series multiplies an AP by a GP: its terms are [a+(k−1)d] rk−1[a + (k - 1)d]\,r^{k - 1}[a+(k−1)d]rk−1. To add nnn terms, write SSS and rSrSrS one under the other, shifted by one place, and subtract: a geometric series is left in the middle. For ∣r∣<1|r| < 1∣r∣<1 the sum to infinity is a1−r+dr(1−r)2\dfrac{a}{1 - r} + \dfrac{dr}{(1 - r)^2}1−ra+(1−r)2dr.
  • Telescoping and the method of differences: A telescoping sum has terms of the form f(k)−f(k+1)f(k) - f(k + 1)f(k)−f(k+1), so everything cancels except f(1)−f(n+1)f(1) - f(n + 1)f(1)−f(n+1). Partial fractions turn terms like 1k(k+1)\dfrac{1}{k(k + 1)}k(k+1)1 into such differences. When the gaps between the terms of a series form an AP or a GP, find the nnnth term from the gaps first. A harmonic progression has reciprocals in AP.
