pH is minus the logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration, so one step of pH is a factor of ten. A solution of pH 3 has a hundred times as many hydrogen ions as one of pH 5.
This is the first lesson of Acids, Bases and Salts: Beyond the Textbook, free for everyone to read.
On a ruler, a step of is always the same length. The pH scale is not like that. A step of on the pH scale means ten times more or less of something.
An acid gives hydrogen ions, , in water. The amount in each litre is the concentration , in mol/L. In pure water it is a very small number, , which is . In hydrochloric acid it is , which is .
Numbers like are awkward. The chemist Søren Sørensen suggested a plain number instead: the power of ten, with the minus sign removed.
If you do not know logarithms yet, read it this way. For a concentration written as , the pH is just .

Between pH and pH the concentration of hydrogen ions falls from to . That is ten times less. Between pH and pH the change is times.
This is the common mistake: pH is not twice as acidic as pH . It is a hundred times as acidic.
A base gives hydroxide ions, . In water, at , the two concentrations multiply to a fixed number:
So the two powers of ten add up to : . For sodium hydroxide, , so and . This is why the scale in the textbook runs from to .
You should find that the blue dot is always one step higher for each power of ten, however strong the acid was.
A strong acid is diluted times. The concentration of hydrogen ions falls to a tenth, so the pH goes up by . It is diluted times: the pH goes up by .
An acid never becomes a base by dilution. If you dilute an acid a million times, its pH moves towards (the water takes over), and it does not pass .
This program changes a concentration to a pH, and compares two pH values.
Try each one on your own first. If you are stuck, open a hint. Then check with Show the answer.
Acids, Bases and Salts: Beyond the Textbook is a Standard course. It adds 2 more lessons, practice and tests on top of the free chapter.
