A root grows from the radicle. A tap root system has one main root with branches, as in dicots. A fibrous system has many thin roots of one size, as in monocots. A root tip has a cap and three regions. Roots may store food, give support or take in air.
A stem grows from the plumule and bears leaves at its nodes, with internodes between. Buds sit at the tip and in the leaf axils. Stems carry water and food. Some stems store food, climb, defend the plant, make food or spread it.
A leaf has a leaf base, a petiole and a lamina, with veins in a network or side by side. Leaves are simple or compound, and are arranged on the stem as alternate, opposite or whorled. Some leaves change for climbing, defence, storage or trapping insects.
